HOME ENERGY EFFICIENCY TEAM (HEET)

The Energy Task Force would like to sponsor and support a Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET) in Braintree.  The Team would be made up of volunteers who will work to increase the energy efficiency of residences and buildings in Braintree.

There are two parts to HEET -

1. Energy upgrade work parties, or “Barn-Raisings”, begin with an Energy Audit. This involves a few tests including a Blower Door Test which measures the amount of air (hot or cold) lost when the home is closed up. The audit shows where improvements should be made that are within the scope of HEET.

2. The HEET Team would go in and make small improvements, including:
  • installing programmable thermostats
  • insulating a bulkhead door
  • changing light bulbs
  • insulating pipes
  • filling holes
  • caulking windows
  • blocking the chimney
  • installing low flow shower heads
These small changes can significantly increase the energy efficiency of a home and reduce energy costs.

The term Barn-Raising is used because this Program combines helping others, community participation, and working for the greater good. Team leaders and volunteers will be trained. By becoming involved, individuals can learn and gain experience so that soon they will be able to make these improvements on their own.

Improvements are usually funded through donations and fundraising.  The improvements are free to the residents.
