The following items contain mercury, an element that can be harmful to human health and the environment and must be disposed of properly:
Fluorescent light bulbs. These are recyclable at most stores that sell them, including Home Depot, Lowe’s and Richmond Hardware. Or they can be brought to Braintree’s twice-annual Household Hazardous Waste events.
Thermostats. Old thermostats can be returned during Household Hazardous Waste events, or to the Braintree Health Department, 90 Pond Street, hours: 8:30AM- 4:30PM M,T,Th,F & Sat, 9AM–2PM and exchange for a non-mercury one.
Mercury thermometers. Residents can exchange mercury thermometers for non-mercury digital ones for free at the Health Department or the Ivory Street Recycling Center.
Rechargeable batteries, button cell and nickel cadmium batteries Rechargeable batteries may be brought to Best Buy or Whole Foods, or Braintree’s Household Hazardous Waste events. Apple stores will accept any rechargeable Apple product battery.
